Say what you want about AB drivers, their bus drivers never know when to give up..

Holy crap. I don’t know if it’s the tires or what over here, but all it takes is 1-2cm of snow or slush and the buses are sliding all over the place

They usually don’t put winters on them here, a lot have auto chains for if it gets really bad- same as the school busses.

It surprises me that with all that weight and the big dually drive wheels, city buses seem less adept at snow travel than almost any other form of vehicle, including RWD sports cars.

Yeah I don’t really get it. I wonder if they don’t have enough weight over the front wheels somehow, the problem usually seems to be an apparently inability to steer

Heavy truck tires are shit in snow due to the tread pattern. Stiff, solid tread blocks with minimal siping. There are ones out there more suitable for winter but goddamn if owners will shell out for them.

When you’re dealing with snow traction, you’re trying to turn kinetic friction (sliding) into static friction (grip.) the basic formula for frictional force (in this case, the force the tires are able to apply to the road surface to move or stop the vehicle) is *N where is the coefficient of either static or kinetic friction and N is the normal force, which in this example is the vehicle weight the tires are carrying. If the road surface is slippery enough and the tires don’t have the proper tread, is going to be so low that it doesn’t matter how heavy the vehicle is.

And on heavy trucks, steer (non drive) tires are allowed to be like this:

There’s no way in hell that kind of tire will have much grip in snow or slush.
